For a few years I've been considering the possibility of logging into World Of Warcraft not so much so I can play (though I might) but so I can chat with family who are there, and recently one of them offered me the login for his account. I've finally got all the software pulled together and am ready to actually figure out how the game works. Today I clicked PLAY and got an existing PC whom I took for a dwarf from the size of everything else. I wandered around for about forty minutes, learning how to move and how to read a map and how to change POV and how to walk your spirit from the graveyard to your corpse to resurrect, and not learning how to talk with anyone or how to even know which people are PCs or to figure out whether anyone else on the account is online to chat with or to pick up objects or to fight back when the drones/bots guarding an armory object to your tourism.

After a year and a week, here are some things I think I know.

1. Grief triggers get older and lose potency, and are replaced by fresh ones.

2. I may never get entirely straight which verb tenses no longer take first person plural.

3. We raised good kids who’ve married good people.

Visiting my in-laws this weekend. They're getting on in years and not getting around so well. They hobble along after each other, putting dinner on or something, squabbling mildy. I watch them and I'm thinking: this is what my wife was looking forward to for us, that the cancer took away. It's good to see others having it.

Monday it's one year. And, I learned today, my in-laws' 58th wedding anniversary.

My stepson and his wife bought a motor home and are packing up the kids to go looking for America Monday. He says Omaha reminds him too much of his mother; that's fair. I'll miss them.

This morning’s Netflix M*A*S*H was White Gold, which means Abyssinia Henry tomorrow I think. That was original broadcast order, and I think it’s what I’ve seen in tv syndication. I remember original broadcast order because the day White Gold first broadcast I was having a bad day at school saved only by the anticipation of M*A*S*H on tv that evening, which was then soured because a friend showed me the People magazine article that spoiled Henry’s death the next week. The whole reason I had got so fond of M*A*S*H was that I thought Henry Blake was the character most like me out of all fiction.

When Abyssina Henry aired the next week I watched it, as I did most of my tv watching in those days, with my sister. Then I went back to my room for a half hour or an hour because that’s what I always did on Tuesday while there was nothing on that we watched, and my sister (I found out later) went to my mom, naturally very upset, and told her what had happened to Henry. My mother was concerned for me and only learned later that I had known beforehand. She asked me why I hadn’t told my sister what was going to happen, but I hadn’t wanted to spoil it for her as it was spoiled for me. Which, it occurs to me today, rather disproves retroactively any concern anyone might have had that adolescent me couldn’t tell the difference between story characters and real people.

The memorial service was tonight at 5:00. My father and I each spoke during the service. It was a beautiful service and I broke down more than I have all week.

Tonight's playlist: Rhapsody in Blue, Rose's Theme, Close Your Eyes, Can You Read My Mind?, Everything I Do, and Still The One.
