"Say," said McCoy, "dja see Jean-Luc's report where he boarded the TARDIS and hared off to the Dalek homeworld?"

"Indeed," said Spock, sipping the spring water he'd requested in lieu of sharing McCoy's brandy. "An interesting window into the working of the Dalek mind. In our day, they attempted to suborn Starfleet's equipment; now, they attempted to suborn Starfleet's personnel."

"An' it took'em eighty years to come up with the new twist on the old plot," McCoy snorted into his snifter.

"To concieve and implement it," Spock corrected mildly. "Such biological engineering as Captain Picard described is not simple. Still, such intelligences as the Daleks will not have taken as much as eighty years on the achievement once resolved to it. The interim between the two versions of the plot does suggest an inefficiency in logic unaided by imagination."

After all these years such an admission wasn't the novelty it had once been, and McCoy's thoughts went elsewhere. "I wonder what that leaves them to try."
