Brought to mind by my last meme post.
Lots of STAR WARS fans were dismayed by the innovation in EPISODE I of the basis of Jedi powers being microscopic symbiotes called midichlorians, on the grounds that till then Jediism was egalitarian but now it was hereditary. Silly, unimaginative STAR WARS fans.

tiggerallyn on my flist recently linked to the entry on his proper blog in which he postulated - among other things - that Palpatine wanted Anakin not to get the usual Jedi lifetime training - and to live a hard underworld life - so he'd be more susceptible to turning once he finally started training.
