The Twitter mirror function seems to have missed a day, maybe two. What have you missed?

  • Saturday afternoon the recently repaired laptop ceased drawing power again after about a week and a half. I went to my office for the USB drive that I use for offsite backup for all my files, and updated it from the malfunctioning laptop ("The Third") which still has an hour or two of battery power on it. Then, since the temporary laptop I had been using ("K-9") became [livejournal.com profile] qtrhorserider's primary laptop once I was done with it, I assumed as my new temporary laptop the laptop that had been [livejournal.com profile] qtrhorserider's primary laptop ("Mr. Smith"). Mr. Smith doesn't seem to run quite as slow for what I do as for what she does, which is good, but there's no room on the hard drive to make working copies of my files. So I am obliged for the duration of the current crisis to make the USB drive the working copy of my fileset, and to back it up weekly to the tower connected to the tv ("Adric"); and, since the backup isn't mobile, to carry the USB drive with me when I leave the house to minimize the chances of loss of both work and backup.
The repair guy says he'll look at The Third again, under warranty from the previous work.
The good news is, this time my music is backed up.
  • Due to computer issues AKOTAS published two days of filler, and despite plans nothing new appeared at The Hero of Three faces or its tumblr.
  • Saturday before the computer issues I tweeted that my right lower eyelid was twitching, cuz I like to track here which one it is when that happens.

Let's see if there's a mirror post today. Usually they come at noon.

Also, I like to track here when I get a tic in my eyelid but I don't like to make an entry just for that. This week, upper right.

I'm still looking for a job, since getting laid off last February when the plant closed. But the criteria for the search has changed.

Since I last wrote about this, [livejournal.com profile] qtrhorserider sat down and made me consider the possibility of going back to school full time to zonker that bachelor's. After my next birthday we'll both be past the half-century mark, and there's no sense wasting time on things we don't like doing. I was convinced.

But that led to something else that I'd been thinking about for longer than I ought've gone without resolving it, like, more than one semester. It seems to me that a computer science major oughtn't be someone who's only interested in coding when he has a class assignment. And there are pretty fundamental concepts, like interfaces, that I can only define when I've been studying for a test. So I saw my adult education program advisor and changed my major to English, focussing on British literature, with an eye to going to grad school for Arthurian studies.

So now I'm looking for a part-time job that I can keep when school starts in August (I did summer semester once. Not doing it again. Everything goes in one ear and out on the test.). Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] qtrhorserider has been laid off. She can use the time for studying for the bar - she's determined to pass this time, having missed it by three points last time - but making ends meet until September when the results of the test are announced and the candidates are sworn in may be a little tricky.

The last time I brought up this subject in this space, you may recall, in conclusion I said that I had done so largely to record that the eyelid tic I get when stressed was occurring in my lower right lid, so that the next time I got one I could look back and see whether it migrates. Today it's in the lower left lid.

I'm no good at hunting for a job while I actually have one. As it happens, that obstacle will be gone after next Tuesday.

I've mentioned in passing in this space that on Veterans Day the place where I work announced to its employees it was closing at the beginning of March, which a week ago was bumped about ten days early. It's a mixed curse. There's a lot I'm not happy with about the position. It's telephone customer service, and the shift I'm on is 05:30-14:00. I took the shift so I could go to classes in the afternoons, but I am not a morning person. There's a quota to meet for not creating service visit orders, and I have difficulty meeting it. And I think I'd be better off in a position where I don't spend all the time in a cubicle without any contact with others but phone calls from people I'll never talk to again; I need to get back into office work until I zonker into computer science. But given how much I hate jobhunting, if not for the closing I'd've stayed in this position until I'd got fired for the service job quota issue (might not have lasted this long). I ought've left my last job before I did, too.

[livejournal.com profile] qtrhorserider has been more agitated about this than I, at least until recently when she researched out that there are affordable options for health insurance if I shouldn't find a new position right away. For "right away" read "after the separation package money runs out"; they did offer a nice incentive for those of us who have stuck it out to the end, including insurance coverage for the time that the separation pay lasts if we send the payments to the insurance company ourselves.

Well, I say I'm not agitated about it, but the last week or so I've had this twitch in my lower right eyelid. That happens to me occasionally, and I suspect it's stress- and sleep-deprivation- related. Actually the only reason I'm writing about it here is because I'm curious whether it's always the same eyelid and want to look back here the next time it happens.
