I think the answer to that rather speaks to scarfman's point, though: the events of "The Journey Home" don't really follow closely from "The Wrath of Khan" and "The Search for Spock", so it doesn't matter that in the new timeline the Wrath and the Search won't happen at the same time or in the same way. A more important worry is whether the new-timeline-Enterprise will have the adventure that led to them discovering the time travel mechanism they used to go fetch the whales.

Also interesting to think about: If they do go back in time to fetch some whales, will they have to go somewhere else and fetch some different whales so that they don't cross paths with their other selves?

Seems to me Elder Spock is the answer to both those concerns.
