Nah, Handles is just another case of Moffat letting a bunch of time pass between episodes, like how we never got a scene where Clara started training as a teacher. There's a conversation somewhere in the episode where the Doctor explains where he got Handles from.

It occurred to me today that there's been no one living in the TARDIS with the Doctor since The God Complex. I wonder whether that's quite good for him, perhaps spurred by a quote I saw on Tumblr (I think) that argued Davies gave the Doctor moral dilemmas and Moffat lets the Doctor be the vengeful god. (On the other hand, given the way he was able to pop through the universe and recruit a "gang" in A Good Man Goes To War and Dinosaurs on a Space Ship, plenty of room is left for fanfiction to create its own TARDIS passengers through the period.)
