A lesson is learned but the damage is irreversible

I trod on somebody's toes this week. I apologized abjectly, but put thought into it and couldn't come up with anything to be done for reparation except nothing more.

Fortunately, few people have as big a problem with this as Mr. Roper did in days past, before he got that ingrown toenail repaired. (Of course, I think he got it repaired in the 1980s, so this was days LONG past.)

Scant help though it may be, all we can do is apologize and try to do better. Although, if the victim is female, a gift certificate for a pedicure might help, come to think of it.

While this was a figurative toe-stepping, I suppose a gift pedicure might still not be inappropriate...

Thing about figurative (as opposed to literal) toes: they grow back. You apologized, and it's clear that you were sincere. Now it's in their court as to whether they get past it or not.

Granted, if you know 'em well, perhaps a gift wouldn't be out of the question. Or a demonstration: you could offer to eat a slice of Humble Pie? Or some such. hee
