I hate to admit my cluelessness, but although their expressions are a riot in that strip.. I don't understand the Talk Like a Pirate Day "punchline."

The joke is, instead of going "yarrr" and "me hearties" like we do these days, they're talking like the pirates the Excalibur encounters: shouts of panic and agonized cries of death.

It's actually pretty dark if you think about it long enough.
