This may be a ridiculously geeky question, but is the Oxford don anybody in particular?

(I ask because there's something about him reminds me of the Don with the Nose from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, except that he was at Cambridge. And, come to think of it, talking too much was the opposite of his problem.)

The character himself is whole cloth. What he's wearing is modeled on the most colorful outfit that came up when I imagesearched on oxford don. I haven't seen Dirk Gently yet (though I've seen stills, and that guy looks nothing like the description in the book).

That's arguably fair turnabout, since the Professor Chronotis described in the book looks nothing like that guy in the original TV series. :)

Actually, I was thinking of one of the characters in the book, who first appears at the college dinner near the beginning:

He was thin and vole-like and had the most extraordinarily long bony nose - it really was very, very long and very bony indeed. In fact it looked a lot like the controversial keel which had helped the Australians win the America's Cup in 1983, and this resemblance had been much remarked upon at the time, although not of course to his face.

I realized after I composed my reply that nothing in your comment actually specified that you weren't speaking of a book character, but I posted anyway. I guess I had been itching to say that awhile.
