I get the general tone of the 8/4 strip, but Arthur's last line is -really- difficult to understand for me. What "it" does he remember poorly, and what "first one" did Arthur turn to drink after?

How about if the line were, "And I remember much of them poorly because I started drinking after the first one"?

Not really an improvement.

The key point here goes beyond pronoun trouble. You've fixed the plurality issue, but when you plunk the noun in to replace the pronoun... "And I remember much of my family relations poorly because I started drinking after the first one."

Now, which of Arthur's family relations came first? Did he take a shot with his milk? Did he manage to booze prior to his own conception? Or, to be more realistic, did he first take to the sauce after learning of his royal birth, or of his relation to Morgause, or what?

"And I remember them poorly because the more I learned the more I turned to drink," is the general sense, and probably the shortest way of saying it that makes sense, at least to me.

Hoel's dialog points up that (except that Uther was Arthur's father) Arthur's family ties didn't come out till after Bedegraine. In any case Hoel is speaking only of those which came out after Bedegraine, and Arthur is responding to Hoel's speech. The first of Arthur's family ties to come out after Bedegaine was that Ygraine was his mother and therefore he'd just slept with his sister. Maybe Hoel and Gawaine don't know that Arthur slept with his sister*, but the audience does. Q.E.D.

If more than one person independently finds it unclear, I'll rewrite it.

* Gawaine might, since Agravaine and Gaheris were present when Morgause found out, in the fairy tale arc. In the space arc only Arthur, Merlin, Morgan and Uther have been seen to know.

I've gone ahead and made that change, because that it represented a disagreement of pronoun number. Which is something I usually pay more attention to. Maybe I will go home sick at lunchtime.

Made sense. If I'd just found out who my mum was, and that she was my lover's mum, I'd probably have started drinking heavily too. hehe
