Well, I do the peanut butter first because my mother was in the habit of keeping the bread in the freezer, and it was a lot easier to spread... well, anything, but peanut butter specifically while it was still frozen.

I always use a spoon for the jelly. Then you can lick a knife AND a spoon.

I use a spoon for both, and use the peanut butter first because it sticks to the spoon better, and is less likely to end up in the preserves.

I always do peanut butter first. Jelly can be spread on top of it, but not the other way around, unless you want them to mix.
