Fandom is religion.
Nov. 16th, 2011 07:25 amIt's been all over the internet for two days that David Yates, director of the last half of the Harry Potter franchise, has discussed in an article on Variety's website that he wants to do Doctor Who, a movie outside tv continuity.
I'd like to see it done. People don't realize it nowadays, because motion pictures is a relatively new medium and because modern intellectual property law hobbles the process; but remake and sequel is the natural state of pop storytelling. It's always going to happen to a story that survives. Some people may rather see Doctor Who die out than have that happen, but I'm not one. Those are the people who'd've been saying in the twelfth century, "Who the hell is this Lancelot guy? Everyone knows the best knight of the Table is Gawaine. And the story's just a ripoff of the Tristram cycle."
On the other hand, as many including current showrunner Steven Moffat have pointed out, this isn't the first time in the past thirty five years there have been celebrity names associated with a theoretical Doctor Who theatrical release that doesn't actually have any production backing yet. Remember when Denzel Washington was going to play the Doctor?
