Strictly speaking, it wasn't the proton packs themselves that took Gozer out; the four crossed streams caused her dimensional rift to invert and suck her back through. But that's not Illyria's problem. :-)

I am wondering exactly how Xander got hold of that, though. I can't imagine Egon letting one go easily - must have gotten it from Ray . . .

That it took four beams is why Illyria is certain a single proton pack - or its beam - is no danger to her.

Actually at one point - perhaps before the script ever actually got written down - Xander's dialog in the third panel included the sentence, "Egon had a spare." When Xander's got an eyepatch, it must be at least eighteen years since the Ghostbusters went into business: they must have gone through a lot of proton packs, and surely some of those must have been retired in favor of upgraded models while still functional.
