I was thinking the other day about those webcartoonists (and actors, and writers) who make their living on their creative endeavors and speak or write about how lucky they are to get paid for what they'd be doing anyway. And I realized, I'm the one who does it anyway, and I'm good with that.

Then [livejournal.com profile] qtrhorserider was having a riding lesson today, her first lesson in months, back with the teacher she'd been with most recently. They were discussing her decision of two or three weeks ago not to take the bar exam again (occasioning her switching her Twitter handle from @horselawyer to @horseyparalegal), reversed earlier this week (Twitter handle reversal contingent on bar exam results). Janet the teacher was discussing her own decision toward the end of last year to stop offering lessons at a time when she had to sell the horse she owned then. Within fifteen minutes, Janet said, she was backpedaling to herself on it, asking herself, how can she give up on her ministry? She actually used the word ministry, "because it is a ministry, and your law work is yours". And I thought, my cartoons are my ministry.

I really like how you put this - and how you see your cartoons. One does something like this because it brings one joy, because it is a tool to bring one into closer connection with the rest of humanity (those are, I think, at least two of the building blocks of what makes a ministry.)
