I haven't read the autobiography in question, but the comment of hers I did see suggested that this was all Nichols' head backstory for the character. I do recall reading the story she told when she auditioned for the part: they asked her to read Uhura and they couldn't tell her who the character was because she was still being developed, and Nichols said, "I can't read that. Have me read a developed character if you want to see how good I am." They agreed that made sense and she got the part of Uhura by reading for Spock.
