When I was in first grade and we were taken to the school library to be taught how libraries work, I took out Winnie-the-Pooh. When I brought it home, my mother said, "But we have that." I was just not articulate enough to say, "If I'm going have my first library book, it's going to be Winnie-the-Pooh." Or, "It was the only book I could think of," whatever.

As far as influence of the book on my later years - just take the protagonist of my webcomic, put a few pounds on him and convert him from a human being to a stuffed bear and, well, there you are.
