The other theory I've seen about the Sardicks is that, as the finale reveals, he's "not the same person any more". I'm not sure I buy that: he's maybe not the same person as the Sardick who was there at the start of the episode, but they both have the same relationship to young Sardick. Yours strikes me as a lot more elegant.

Did you ever think that Darrin might be part Time Lord? It would explain the whole Dick York/Dick Sargent thing.

Occam's Razor suggests (if it was reflection at all of something in-text) it was Bewitched magic instead of Doctor Who regeneration. For one thing, no one ever noticed the change.
