I call my dad's wife "my dad's wife". I don't use the word stepmother because, as you may realize from the subject of my webcomic, I take fairy tales seriously and the word stepmother has connotations that I don't care to bring to the table.

(Except when I'm talking about her relation to my boy's eldest, because she's his step-step-step-great-grandmother.)

I called my mom's husband "my mom's husband" because they married after I moved out on my own, so I never lived with him and never felt that we had a father/daughter relationship. I don't see any reason to burden a relationship with more loaded terminology than necessary.
