An interesting thing, although I don't know if it's significant: I own a copy of the short story collection with the pizza story in, and it's not the same story. Perhaps I should say, it's the same story, but a different incarnation. A different incarnation of the story, that is: it's the same Doctor; but in the published version, the person he shares the pizza with is not Nyssa.

If it's a published work, is it fanfiction? The word used to mean unlicensed derivative work, but so many people use it these days to refer to any derivative work (I do it myself sometimes, referring to Virgil, Shakespeare and Malory) that I think we need a new word that means what fanfiction used to mean.

In this instance, the published version was still an unlicensed derivative work - the short story collection was not authorized by the BBC. It was printed and sold by a group of concerned fans to raise money for a charity.
