Sherrod's experience is just like Reid's last January (except worse): people don't look to see the difference between racist remarks and remarks about racism. The thesis of Sherrod's speech was the dangers of prejudgment. I think we all could have done without the resulting practical experience.

Not to say that racism isn't a real and genuine problem, but I think in this day and age people tend to be over-sensitive to it. Me, I say let's glorify our racial and cultural differences; We've all got stuff to be proud of and stuff to be ashamed of, but in the end it's like being different instruments in an orchestra. Violins aren't remotely like trumpets but when they play together, music happens. The more differences we bring into the mix, the more entertaining the harmony, the symphony becomes. ^_^

That's my take on it, anyway. ^_^

The metaphor I've seen is that being non-white is like climbing an escalator that's going down. If you, personally, aren't doing anything to speed the escalator up that's great - but there are plenty of people who are, and it might be good to do something to slow it down.

Oh, I've no illusions about it being a perfect world... Only in how easy it would be to reduce the lack of perfection. ^_^
