Date: 2006-04-29 05:22 am (UTC)I think the biggest difference between the new series and the classic show is that The Doctor isn't the protagonist -- Rose is. This season is all about her -- not just from her point of view, but about the impact that her travels with the Doctor have on her and on those she left behind.
I haven't seen as much of the classic series as I'd like, but I think she's the first Companion who even has a HINT that she had family and loved ones that she left behind.

Actually, most or at least many twentieth-century companions boarded the TARDIS after having lost their families (sometimes figuratively), often their father.
