scarfmom mananged to fall behind four of Sci-Fi's Doctor Whos, so we caught up tonight, finishing up with tonight's, Father's Day.

I cried all through it. It's the best one.

We just watched that, too. And yes. It's an impressive piece of work when you know exactly where an episode is going from the pre-credits teaser, and it STILL hits you like that.

I think the biggest difference between the new series and the classic show is that The Doctor isn't the protagonist -- Rose is. This season is all about her -- not just from her point of view, but about the impact that her travels with the Doctor have on her and on those she left behind.

I haven't seen as much of the classic series as I'd like, but I think she's the first Companion who even has a HINT that she had family and loved ones that she left behind.

Actually, most or at least many twentieth-century companions boarded the TARDIS after having lost their families (sometimes figuratively), often their father.
