No. People don't realize it because film is such a relatively new medium and modern intellectual property law hobbles the process, but sequel and remake are the natural state of pop entertainment.

Heh... would you agree that, if people DO insist on doing a remake, that it should be, shall we say, "Not Crap"? ^_^

That right there is probably the root of at least 80% of resistance to the idea of remakes.

*Picture of Innocence* Moi? ^_^

Actually, it can and does go the other way... You've Got Mail (1998, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan) was VASTLY better than The Shop Around the Corner (1940, James Stewart, Margaret Sullivan).

Don't forget Judy Garland's In The Good Old Summertime and the Harnick/Bock musical She Loves Me (which is my favorite incarnation of the story and I don't think it ever made it to film.)

Someday I hope to see an English translation of Miklos Lazlo's play Parfumerie which was the original original. Wonder where he stole the plot from?

Shakespeare, probably. Who himself would have got it from some Italian heroic romance that no-one remembers any more. 8-).

And don't forget The Maltese Falcon (1931, Ricardo Cortez, Bebe Daniels), except of course everyone has, which is kind of my point...

I've been trying to... after hearing for decades how wonderful and influential it was, I finally sat down and watched it... and was bored out of my skull. Remakes could only improve it, I don't know if it's possible for it to get worse.

And I, for one, prefer the John Carpenter version of The Thing.

I'd like to make you quote Sturgeon, if only so I know what the quote IS.

I don't mind remakes. Really, it depends on the quality of the remake. After all, in a technical manner in Japan they remade Gojira so many times, but the U.S. attempt was just plain... ugh.

The first time the U.S. folks made Dune into a movie, it annoyed the fans. Until they made it into a TV series which set the good points of the movie in high relief. Such as that the it was largely accurate to the book except for that ridiculous ending.

The Lord of the Rings movies were so good, they make me have high hopes for The Hobbit.
