No. People don't realize it because film is such a relatively new medium and modern intellectual property law hobbles the process, but sequel and remake are the natural state of pop entertainment.

Date: 2010-05-02 03:19 am (UTC)I don't mind remakes. Really, it depends on the quality of the remake. After all, in a technical manner in Japan they remade Gojira so many times, but the U.S. attempt was just plain... ugh.
The first time the U.S. folks made Dune into a movie, it annoyed the fans. Until they made it into a TV series which set the good points of the movie in high relief. Such as that the it was largely accurate to the book except for that ridiculous ending.
The Lord of the Rings movies were so good, they make me have high hopes for The Hobbit.
