There's been a lot of talk about the lonely god character arc now that Waters of Mars has made it wholly unambiguous that there is one. There's been speculation, based on Timothy Dalton's spoiler photo costume and IMDb credit, that Davies is bringing back the Time Lords this Christmas; and there's been dismay expressed at the thought - "breaking his toys so no one else can play with them" was how one opinion put it. I would tend to agree, unless it was part of an arc he'd been working all along. Now I won't be surprised if he does it.

Edit Saw in the past day a quote from Moffat saying he's happier with Gallifrey out of the picture. Now I'd be surprised to see Davies bring them back.

Someone just pointed out to me that a gavel knocks four times...

No, I wouldn't be surprised either. Maybe he even brings them back, after all he can do anything now. One tidbit from DWM supports your theory - that for one scene Ten dons a costume we've never seen before.

If I remember rightly, one time-honoured punishment was taking away regenerations. Wonder where that leaves TenToo and Donna?

It might be a way to re-energize the series. It's kind of existentialist if he's just wandering around, but if he's on the lam from his own people again...that makes things interesting.

Then again I'd love to see the Time Lords back. It's not like every other episode featured them in the old series.

Yeah the only thing about the possibility of the Time Lords coming that makes me not want to see them back is them punishing the Doctor in some way for any violations of the laws of Time he's committed while they've been away.

If what he did in TWoM doesn't count as a violation I don't know what does and in fact I had the thought watching it last night that he was fortunate the other Time Lords aren't around anymore because they would have called him back to Gallifrey for it and I'm sure some sort of punishment would have been meted out too.

Though he messed with the laws of Time, it could be that they're coming back to remind him of who he is and that his job is to heal, not control (the difference between the Doctor and the Master). And it was shown that the Master was given more regenerations, so mayhap that's how RTD/SM will explain future seasons. (Also, retraining would be a very nice segway into a younger actor for the next Doctor, as he would be invigorated by learning. Or something like that, I'm not entirely sure how to word it.)

I suspect Rusty always knew he would come full circle back to the lonely god/hubris theme of S2.

"there's been dismay expressed at the thought - "breaking his toys so no one else can play with them""

I can't understand dismay of bringing back the Time Lords from old whovians (who know the story) or new whovians (who know nothing about them).

(BTW, I always giggle every time I see the "breaking his toys" meme. It's the overreacting equivalent to "it's a slap in the face!" in the gaming community. It's the Godwin's law of DW).

I think he's clearly working to a Masterplan. He may not have had all the beats worked out, but there was definitely an endpoint in mind. And I think that once we can go back and look at the RTD-era in toto, the linkages will be clearer.

The 10th Doctor claims there's no higher authority than himself as early as New Earth, the hubris and arrogance have always been there.

I think that the Time Lords are going to be resurrected due to some manipulation of the timeline, turn out to be evil as a result of the same changes, and the Doctor will have to destroy them again.

Ooh...I like that idea. No idea if it's likely/feasible, but I do like it.

I finally watched "The Waters of Mars". In general, I think the Doctor got his comeuppance when Adelaide committed suicide. However, my response to the teasers for the next special was "Oh, not The Master AGAIN." On the other hand, I have a similar reaction to the Cybermen and the Daleks. A bit of "for goodness sakes, the universe is FULL of aliens. Do something NEW." Look, we killed the Master! Look, we killed the Daleks! Look.... Oh bugger, we can't think of anything new.

It's just that "Look, all the other Time Lords are er... dead! Well, except for the Master. And the Doctor does have a lovely young clone, she probably has 13 lives. 12 now, I suppose. They don't have to contradict themselves.

I'm hoping the next regeneration's red-headed companion is a Donna-regeneration, of sorts.

Not sure about the Time Lords as a whole being brought back; personally, my suspicion is that the Matrix is somehow involved, with a side order of The Narrator actually being The Valeyard...
