"What if the universe is entirely phenomenological, and there is no spiritual plane or afterlife?"

Are you sure you mean "phenomenological," rather than "empirical" or "physical"?

As I understand it (and I could be wrong), phenomenology is concerned with the world as we experience it, without making a distinction between subjective and objective. In which case, I think the phenomological answer would be: "There might be an Afterlife ... But let's cross that bridge when we come to it. 'Kay?"

Wasn't there a song by Sting (or somesuch) with the line: "Let's make Heaven a place on Earth"?

That sounds good to me....

I like [livejournal.com profile] capriuni's answer about crossing that bridge when we come to it. Is it going to make a difference to the way I live my life whether or not I believe something survives after death? Probably not.

Well, maybe it'll determine how many weeks of being woken up by mice go by before I give up on the humane mousetrap and go to the ol' neck-snapper.
