Summary: I thought Mickey and Jack were a lot more bantery in Journey's End than was set up in Boomtown. Here's why.

On entering the Hub, Jack told Suzie to stand down. In his office he picked up the phone and dialed from memory. "Hey, Mickey Mouse!"
"Who is this?"
"Captain Jack Harkness."
"You? What are you, calling from Andromeda?"
"Cardiff, actually."
"Again? Decide you like it there, did you?"
"Something like that. Listen, did you see in the news about that meteor shower?"
"Couple of weeks ago, yeah."
"Did you see about that new headmaster who's breaking all kinds of records?"
"Yeah. So?"
"You might want to ring up Rose's cellphone and mention both things to her and the Doctor."
"Why should I?"
"Chance to see Rose. Maybe even impress her with your mad alien-detection skillz. Just don't mention my name."
"All right, what's the deal? I saw the way you look at her, man."
"And him."
"Back on topic, Captain Cheesecake, why are you passing this up yourself?"
"Well, I wasn't going to, but I got a second opinion."
The impossibly young man with the long stringy hair, lantern jaw, eccentric clothing and pretty ginger traveling companion didn't appear in any Torchwood or UNIT files, yet, but the police box was a compelling piece of ID, particularly since Jack had seen it appear. "Rose and I didn't need any help," was what he'd apparently dropped by the tourist center to tell Jack. "Sarah Jane Smith showed up."
"I've been dying to meet her! All the more reason for Suzie and me to check things out with you!"
"No, you can't come to the school, for two reasons. First, it'd only alert Torchwood One, and that's not something you, I or the timeline want. Second, you don't catch up with me again till about Election Day when I'll answer your questions and you'll clue me in on this conversation."
"Yeah yeah, miles to go, paradoxes to fulfill. All right, I'll call Mickey."
"Right. Oh, and while I'm at it: When the TARDIS does land on the Rift next, it'll start materializing in the Hub. But, for reasons I described then, it'll end up materializing on the Plas instead of right next to you. So be prepared for a bit of a sprint to catch up, there's a good chap."

Date: 2009-06-15 04:08 pm (UTC)It couldn't have been Doctor Nine because the Doctor didn't even know of the Krillitane thing then. I picked Doctor Eleven for a plot-based reason which I only half-remember now, possibly related to that I originally planned to do this one as a comic strip till I realized most of it is talking heads on the phone. Making it Doctor Eleven would be the best way visually to convey that this was, relatively to him, after both School Reunion and Last of the Time Lords. If Tennant had started wearing yet a third color suit last year or this, that would have done too, but he didn't. Though I belatedly suppose Doctor Ten with River at his side would have done as well, if I'd thought of it, to set the story during Season 2009; that's why I put River in The Battle for Coruscant. I do remember realizing that deciding to do this story in prose meant it won't require editing, once Smith's costume is revealed, like a comics trip version would've.
