He hovered in front of her as she opened her eyes, so that he'd be the first thing she'd see, even in the poor streetlighting in this place. "Hallo!" he said, waving his fingers at her, grinning maniacally.
The Doctor really was pleased to see things work out for Donna. Now that her memories would be returned, even including the ones that were really his that she'd picked up in the metacrisis, they'd go back to being mates again - traveling space and time, reversing the polarities of neutron flows, running for their lives. Of course, she might be a little ticked off at him, about the memory erasing thing, since he'd done it against her express wishes, even if it had been to save her life. He was half expecting the first thing she did on waking up to be a good old Donna Noble slap -
She punched him in the nose.
"You bastard!" the Doctor heard, lying in the debris of the Chiswick alley where fate had caught up with them. It was a poor part of town and the buildings either side of the alley were falling over - the Doctor had one end of something long and blocky and with pointy corners in the small of his back. Wooden, probably, from the feel of splinters poking through his clothing. It was only the most uncomfortable of the bits of building he was lying on. There were sharp things, but those wounds wouldn't start to hurt till later.
The stars in his vision cleared mercifully quickly, but then he almost wished them back. Donna towered over him, in a rage like he'd never seen before.
"You blokes are all alike!" she screamed. She'd never screamed at him before. "Think you know what's best for everyone, never mind what they want for themselves!"
"You were dying!" he shouted back, more confused than defensive. He propped himself up to a sitting position, not wanting to go full upright yet in case she'd only want to knock him down again.
"Ever heard of a living will?" Donna hissed. "That's what I gave you, even if it was verbally. Some doctor you are!"
"I'm sorry," said the Doctor. She'd backed off when he sat up, which meant she might not want to hit him again, so he got the rest of the way back to his feet, managing to steady himself without putting his hands down on any loose nails or broken glass. "Let's just put it behind us. Come back to the TARDIS and we can travel forever, just like you wanted." His nose was beginning to swell, interfering slightly with his elocution.
Donna stared at him open-mouthed for a moment. "Go back with you?" She sounded like she'd been asked to meet with Lance to patch things up. "And the next time things get a little hairy, you'll wave a magnet at my hard drive and drop me home again? No thanks!"
"But ... Donna ..." The Doctor was heartbroken at the degree he'd lost her trust.
Donna stomped up to him. He managed not to flinch in anticipation of another punch. "I don't need you, spaceman. I've got all I need right here." She tapped her head. "I'll build my own time capsule, even if it takes me years. I'll do my own traveling now, thank you very much. And," she added, poking his chest, "if you're lucky," poke, "maybe I'll turn up sometime to rescue your skinny little arse!" She gave him one last mighty poke, turned her back, and stalked out of the alley without another look at him.
Or she'd've seen that with her last poke she'd actually pushed him backwards a step.
And he'd tripped over a brick.

A lot of fans disagree with that, I've seen, but I'm not one of them.
