Date: 2008-11-07 07:44 pm (UTC)Now, if you take this a little further, I can see Merlin as Moriarty, and Guenevere as Irene Adler. Arthur's dog would be Toby. But who would be Lestrade?
As for your essay with the 11/7 strip, I just have one thing to say: If it works, use it. (But who is the guy berating Arthur, anyway?)

Date: 2008-11-08 03:37 pm (UTC)For Irene Adler, Elaine might be more appropriate; if you don't conflate Elaine of Carbonek and Elaine of Astolat, then Elaine of Carbonek since she's the one who outfoxed Lancelot into her bed, twice. For Gregson, you could pick one of the suggestions I offered you for Lestrade that you didn't pick for Lestrade. For Wiggins, I think you'd want Gareth, or maybe Tom of Newbold Revell from The Once and Future King.
Also you left out, what was his name, Stanley Hopkins?, the younger Yard inspector from the later stories. For him you'd want Gareth or Percivale.

Date: 2008-11-08 02:49 am (UTC)He wore the deerstalker in the city in Murder by Decree.
The deerstalker was an invention of William Gilette in stage portrayals in the first place, entering the Holmes mythos by the back door much like Jimmy Olsen entered the Superman mythos through radio rather than comics, and as such is an element to be drawn on or not at the discretion of the storyteller of the moment. Or in other words - as you know - there is no such thing as canon.
I suppose Gawaine could be Lestrade. Or, if we want someone who dislikes Arthur more, Mark or Lot. Or, if we want someone who dislikes Arthur but comes around, Uriens or Nentres.
The guy berating Arthur is Brandiles, who's peppered through the Morte in several minor bits, including the bit adapted to AKOTAS last week when Tristram has to deal with the reputation of knights from Cornwall.

Date: 2008-11-08 03:11 pm (UTC)Gillette was responsible for the image of the curved pipe. He chose that particular pipe because it was one he could keep in his mouth hands-free while delivering his lines. In the Doyle stories, Holmes had a variety of pipes that he smoked, including one cherrywood pipe that Watson said Holmes preferred when he was in an argumentative mood.
