I will point out that if he was in London, Sherlock Holmes would not be wearing his deerstalker. He only wore that when he was going out in the country. In the City, he would wear a hat similar to Watson's.

Now, if you take this a little further, I can see Merlin as Moriarty, and Guenevere as Irene Adler. Arthur's dog would be Toby. But who would be Lestrade?

As for your essay with the 11/7 strip, I just have one thing to say: If it works, use it. (But who is the guy berating Arthur, anyway?)

I'd have gone for a male Morgan (as in the M*A*S*H parody) as Moriarty (or a female one as Irene, perhaps. Then Guenevere could be Mary Morstan). There's several characterisations of Lestrade: if he's a well-meaning bumbler, then Pellinore; if he's an arrogant twit, then Kay; if he's an intelligent and competent police officer, then Merlin.

The guy in the last strip is the knight with Kay and Tor in the first strip. Sir Brandiles, according to the 10/31 strip.

I thought of Morgan as Irene Adler and Guenevere as Mary Morstan about two minutes after I posted my comment. Or maybe a male Morgan as Moriarty, and Morgause as Irene Adler.

But I left out two other semi-regulars from the Homes stories. Who would be Inspector Gregson, and Sam Wiggins?

Actually, the deerstalker was a creation of Sidney Paget, the illustrator of the Holmes stories in The Strand. In one story, Doyle described Holmes as wearing a "soft cloth cap." Paget drew it as a deerstalker. Granted, the image of Holmes and the deerstalker was probably solidified by Gillette's portrayals of Holmes.

Gillette was responsible for the image of the curved pipe. He chose that particular pipe because it was one he could keep in his mouth hands-free while delivering his lines. In the Doyle stories, Holmes had a variety of pipes that he smoked, including one cherrywood pipe that Watson said Holmes preferred when he was in an argumentative mood.
