I understand there's a controversey raging because Mohammad recently appeared in cartoons in a Danish newspaper, when Islam forbids the depiction of the prophet's image.

(This is another cartoon from the body of work that's the "interim step between fanfiction Dailies and Arthur, King of Time and Space".)

Now there's an LJ cartooning meme I would love to see: Draw Mohammed Day!

... main difference being that this Dane, after learning that Islam forbids the depiction of any(!) prophet's image, hires twelve artists to produce caricatures of Mohammed.

Clearly his intention was mocking Islam. I get upset with that kind of behaviour, and I'm no Moslem. But I'm not getting that vibe from you.

Note also that "any prophet" also includes Yoshua bin Yussuf ... and yet, there is no raging controversy over the millions of crucifixes in this world!

If your comic and the crucifixes are indeed left out, it is likely because neither is slamming Islam.

I'm sorry; I was tired and hence, unclear.

The Dane I was referring to is not a cartoonist, but the editor of a Danish newspaper, who hired twelve different artists to make those twelve caricatures.

Other evidence that I was tired: "Yoshua bin Yussuf"?!? It appears I was mixing up several traditions in that name, including those of the Messianic Christians. Of course, by now I'm too tired to recall what name the Koran uses. The Wikipedia will likely know, if anyone is interested.

Also: There are several interpretations of the ban against depictions -- some more severe, some less -- but yes, there are millions of Moslems who consider depictions of any prophet (or angel, or companion of Mohammed) to be forbidden.

What makes this special is that it was an intentional provocation.

... catering to the xenophobic undercurrent across Europe, hiding behind their guaranteed free speech, they present themselves as heroes. I call them cowards.

Sorry about ranting on your journal. I really ought to write an entry about this on my own. Perhaps after some sleep?
