Re: The Cartoon for 4/10. I hate to admit it, but I don't get it.

Is there an answer for Arthur's Question in 4/11? I mean I can probably guess a procedural answer, but is there a good reason why it's still going today?

Oh I can think of a few reasons... The Inquisition, The Crusades, The Nazi Purges of Jews and Gypsys.

But really I think it's more about momentum and the need to fit in.

In the middle ages Relegion served as something to distract the peasants so they wouldn't notice their Lords were stealing them blind and treating them like dirt. After all if they just endured their lot in life and followed the rules they would get to paradise. Given the living conditions who wouldn't want that?

Yeah, that's more or less what I thought how it started... I was just wondering why it's still going. As you say, "momentum" and "herd mentality" probably are the best answers for that.

Don't that beat all

I would be inclined to argue with you somewhat — taking up the side of the Schoolmen with their embrace of life as she is lived, as against the beautiful but ultimately somewhat sterile neo-Platonism of Augustine, and bringing in the question of where the ground rules for the operation of an increasingly complex and diverse society were supposed to come from — but my energies are taken up, & in view of this week's AKOTAS perhaps there is a certain degree of irony in the admission, with organizing an expedition to the Moon.
