I have in fact seen 2001 on the big screen within the last decade, possibly actually in 2001 (it was at a film festival or something of that kind; I forget the details).

And I could have seen The Sound of Music on the big screen if I'd wanted to, if the Singalong Sound of Music counts. (I suspect somehow that Merlin would say it doesn't.)

Big screen is big screen.

The genesis of that gag was, as I wrote on the AKOTAS site on that day, that Greg Dean (previously shown to be one of Merlin's webcartoonist pals) was drawing this week in Real Life about how he'd never seen The Sound of Music and his wife had never seen 2001. It caught my fancy because those are the two films I promised myself when I was young to see first on the big screen. Then, in 1985, 2010 came out, and my friends all said I needed to see 2001 before that. So I rented it and watched it. On VHS. On a twelve-inch screen.

In black-and-white.

I still haven't seen The Sound of Music.
