Watched Love and Monsters today. Had the same thought at the end I always do, same one as Elton - he's cornered and held at bay by this horrible green monster that reminds her of a Raxicoricofallipatorian, and she's having a go at Elton for upsetting her mother? At her worst Rose is the most selfish person who's ever traveled with the Doctor, and that includes his own first personality and Turlough.

But then, tonight, as the scene played out, I saw that once Rose realizes that the monster has cost Elton everything, she hunches down next to him and puts her arm around him. Rose's weakness was also her strength. When the Doctor was focussed on the big picture, Rose had the compassion for the people in front of their noses. Sarah Jane did the same thing for him, but the current personality needs it more (I'm thinking of their reactions to Marcus Scarman's death).

I agree with you, in part, but for my money the most annoying thing about Rose was this whole being "the Doctor's equal" thing: she was more clever, perhaps, than the average companion, but usually only as clever as needed by the plot to move things in the right direction (and given the foreshortened nature of the new format, ala Buffy, it was probably neccessary); otherwise, she was as obtuse as neccessary for the Doctor to appear clever. In my mind, this made her more of a plot device and an emo-pawn than a real person (given the upped ante towards "realistic" people in the new series).

Best thing about Rose? She went away.

Worst thing about Rose? She's coming back.

Sorry...

;-)

I actually didn't mind Rose in the first series, but by the end of S2 I was begging her and her whining teenage 'but I wuv him!' ways to leave.

Yup, now that I look back, S1 Rose was one of the best people on there, but S2? A clue: no.

I really liked that Rose was flawed but still warm and sympathetic. She wasn't perfect and she could be selfish, but her genuine interest and compassion for others as well as just her sparkle always made me like her. I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

i am looking forward to seeing her again, too. as with all of the dr.s "counterparts" as it were, (okay, semantics,) they all have something else going on under the surface, that we, as the audience don't always realise until later. thus the beauty of dr. although, putting rose against martha jones, well, if we were to do that, it'd be a tough decision for me...:)

Well, I'd say that the selfishness was, for me, one of the best&worst things all at once as well, but for a slightly different reason: it gave her a real, genuine character flaw and made her real. No, it's not a good thing, but it's a true thing. It doesn't make me want to re-watch S2 that much, especially not Tooth and Claw, but it does make her more interesting.
