Before my wife got sick, and even most of the years during, feeding time for the cats was when it got dark. They have a crunchy food dispenser all the time next to the water dispenser, but when the big cat got thyroid problems (That eventually went away? I didn't know that happened but it's what the vet eventually told us.) and had to be medicated, we put the daily pills in gooshy food and created a daily gooshy food habit. Dark was feeding time because I wanted them to associate feeding time with when I turned the light on in the kitchen, so they wouldn't bother me before that. Then the last year of my wife's life she spent half of it in homes. Gooshy food time became about ten thirty p.m. because that's when I'd get in. Inadvertently but inevitably the big cat got trained that feeding time is when I come through the door. For the last two or three years she's greeted me at the door when I got home from work no matter how light out it was.

Today she didn't.

(I posted this morning at Tumblr I didn't see her when I got up like usual. Neither of them. The little cat was in the laundry basket in the back room; that's her new favorite place which I also tumbld about yesterday. I seemed to have disturbed the big cat when I went looking to see where they were. I saw her using the back room catpan and I saw her go into the office where the other catpan is, and that was all I saw of her this morning.)

Today after work the little cat was in her other favorite place, on top of the big cardboard box of clothes in the hall (well, I say "hall" ...) but the big cat didn't come out till I sat at the laptop in the office to upload today's Three Faces (for some reason WS_FTP times out all the time on the tower since I moved it into the living room). I don't know where in the office she had been - we moved into this house two months before the brain tumors were discovered and the office is a few layers of never-unpacked boxes. While I was working at the laptop the big cat came loudly out into the living room and flopped onto the floor next to the chair with the tower's monitor. Once I was out in the living room and the light in the office was off again she went back in there. She's hiding because she's ill, I think, like the cat we had in Louisville who took to hiding from us and then died two days later.

I don't have the money or the wheels to take her to the vet. I fear she must just weather whatever this is, or not.
