"Don't worry, Peri," said the Doctor, gripping her shoulders lightly from behind her as they watched the elevator indicator rise. "Now all we have to do is persuade the Docent that his plot is foiled. Unlike most of the would-be conquerors we encounter, he's not an unreasonable man."
Peri expected him to let go of her once he'd finished speaking, but he didn't. In fact, she felt his nose in her hair. Was he nuzzling her?
"Doctor," Peri asked, "are you getting amorous with me?"
"I am, rather." The Doctor's words buzzed in her hair.
Involuntarily Peri's neck receded between her shoulders as if into a turtle's shell. "I'm not really comfortable with that."
The Doctor's nose retreated, though his hands remained on her shoulders. "You're not?"
"Well, no," said Peri. "You're kind of a father figure to me."
"I am?"
"Well, you're smart and powerful like I like to think my dad is. And you're eccentric and short-tempered like my stepfathers all seem to be."
The Doctor let go of Peri's shoulders and moved to stand beside her at the elevator's doors. "Well, since your discomfort was exactly not my purpose, I'll stop."
Peri watched him frown at the rising indicator for a moment. "I might feel different if you tried again some other time," she said.
The Doctor turned and looked at her down his nose, his expression blank but a gleam in his eye. "All right."
They arrived.
