Or it could be that the reason the Doctor is missing Rose so badly when he meets Martha is because, in the interim between The Runaway Bride and Smith and Jones, the Doctor successfully rescued Rose from the parallel world and lived out the normal span of her human lifetime traveling with her along. And he's so cranky with Martha because Rose just died in her sleep of old age in their room in the TARDIS.

Edit 6/07 Naw, that can't be it, because he tells Jack in Utopia that Rose is safe on the parallel Earth.

I think it's because the Rose he really loved was a Upper house Parlor maid at 165 Eaton Place but the Scottish Butler wouldn't let him in the house to ask Miss Buck for her hand in marriage.
