Arthur's palaces' interiors in the fairy tale and space arcs were grays till they were done over in yellow and olive drab, and some rooms still are.
Contemporary Merlin's comics shop has gray walls ... but purple furnishings. That's interesting because purple's Nimue's color and the complement of his color - but I didn't plan it that way. When I first drew the shop interior I only thought, "I'll use gray and purple instead of orange, because Merlin's classroom is already orange1, and because gray doesn't mean anyone and purple doesn't mean anyone yet2." Ever since then I've been a little confused as to what colors to use in Merlin's apartment above the shop, and they probably vary with its every appearance.
1 Why I felt this meant his shop couldn't be orange, I don't recall.
2 This was befoe I decided to make contemporary Nimue his ward.
