That the ship inspection scene in Star Trek I is the most emotionally connecting scene in the film is both the film's greatest virtue and its greatest flaw.

Ah.
The "Beauty Shot" as we call it.

Yes, it is long and drawn out, but it was the great reveal, showing us how spiffy the new Enterprise was.

I love the music though, and it's one of the three TMP tracks on my MP3 player. :)
IMHO, the TMP Enterprise is the prettiest ship of them all.

You know, someone really ought to do an edit of that movie with all the superfluous effects bits trimmed down to no more than three seconds per shot and see how long that movie really is. I personally suspect it'll come out right at about an hour. }:-{D

We have the Director's Cut on DVD.

The wisdom of taking a movie infamous for poor pacing and copious padding and letting the director ADD MORE SCENES IN is dubious at best. This is really the same guy who gave us The Day The Earth Stood Still?
