This "something more than friendship" is a myth. Romance and friendship are not the same scale, as the idiom would place them, with one greater or lesser than the other. Romance and friendship are separate scales like volume and brightness. If one is greater it's friendship because, as anyone in a relationship lasting decades will tell you, friendship is more successful without romance than romance is successful without friendship.
