Sir Patrick Stewart likes to say that no one listens to you in this world unless you’re an old white man and therefore old white men have a duty to speak up for others. Much of what’s wrong with the governments of both his country and mine is the rich old white men in power who are desperately trying to make the world safer for rich old white men when rich old white men are already as safe as anyone in this world can be. They think they can get even safer by taking safety away from everyone else when that’s actually what sets the rest of the world against them and leaves the rest of the world nothing to lose in coming after them. No, when you’re already as safe as possible the way to get even safer is to make everyone else safe too.
