I decided to test my assumption from the other day about The Gripping Hand, that I couldn't be the first person to the web with my question. I googled:

"glenda ruth" "jump shock"

In two pages of results all I got was the same two or four quotes over and over from sites reproducing the same review or blurb of the book - except for the first result on the first page. That was my own LJ entry.

I bet this entry comes second, now.

Hope you remembered to try groups.google.com to look at Usenet newsgroups, especially for the period soon after the book came out. That's where I would expect to see the most discussion, probably on rec.arts.sf.written or the alt group devoted to Niven.

Hadn't tried that yet, but I should've thought of it first. I know that Hand's release date was back when Usenet newsgroups were all the internet discussion fora there was. D'oh.
