I'll make the argument that Harry and James are white based on eye color. It's mentioned time and time again in the books that Harry has Lily's green eyes, and in the DH epilogue, it's mentioned that Albus Severus, the middle child, is the only one of Harry and Ginny's three with green eyes. (Presumably, James Sirius and Lily Luna have Weasley blue eyes.)

If James Potter was non-white, he more than likely would have had brown eyes. Now, the gene for brown eyes is a dominant gene, so if he had brown eyes, it's more likely that Harry would have had brown eyes rather than green eyes.

Yes, there is probably more to it than that, but I am not a geneticist.
