Jul. 29th, 2010 07:36 amThe blocking of elements of the new Arizona immigration law is a victory for, if nothing else, the rule of law. When by law immigration control is the jurisdiction of the federal government, the personal opinion of state officials that the federal government isn't being effective is not sufficient grounds for the state to, literally, take the law in its own hands. Perusing the Wikipedia entry on Governor Jan Brewer, I note no indication of background in law, but I can't imagine she doesn't have legal advisors letting her know that she's fighting a losing battle by precedent. And the sherriff who's so vocal must certainly know the law doesn't work that way. So I wonder what they think they're going to accomplish, when I think they look like idiots.
