There is at the very least a master's thesis, if not a best-selling book, in it for someone to write about the way Doctor Who fandom and science fiction fandom and tv show fandom and baseball fandom and Beatles fandom, et al., fill the space left vacant in the Western human psyche since religion was kicked out of it by the Enlightenment. I'd love to write it myself except I have negative interest in doing the research.
