Leela turned the next corner in the maze, and one of the enemy was there. Feralle, the lieutenant, the second-in-command, the exec. Leela dropped into a crouch, her knife having already been out, and backed up; because she knew the land behind her and he didn't, and because he would think she was afraid of him.

"Not gonna make it out of here, girl," hissed Feralle.

"Surrender," said Leela, "and the Doctor will allow you to live." Leela knew it was true, and after all this time almost understood why the Doctor did it.

"Your Doctor is dead," said Feralle.

"No," said Leela. Not a denial; a contradiction, calm and cool.

Her quiet certainty unsettled him. "What do you mean, 'no'?"

"If you knew the Doctor," said Leela, "you'd know what I mean."
