According to Doctor Who Magazine, the BBC has elected to restart numbering Doctor Who seasons since the cast and production office is entirely new; though next year will be the 31st year a series of Doctor Who is aired, it will be called Series 1. When this was discussed on [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho I wrote:

This is why I call the seasons by years rather than by season numbers, official or otherwise. Season 1963 was season one, people. The original, you might say.

"31"? I know no one but me counts Season 1996 as a season, but that should still make Season 2010 at least the 32nd ... owait, I know, no one but me counts Season 2009 separate from Season 2008, that's what it is. Never mind.

Yup - official production numbering for this year's episodes (I'm beggared if I'll call them 'specials') is 14.X - although, apparently, DT finds that very confusing!

I don't get it.
