I was expecting some grief triggers this first Valentine's Day without her, but what blindsided me as an unexpected trigger was a reminder of yesterday's fifteenth anniversary of Charles Schulz's death.
That's what the Visiting Nurse Association grief counselor said. I had spoken of expecting catharsis and closure from the rollercoaster that had been the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas. She said that there never stop being triggers, but that they come less often as you go along - as there are fewer and fewer reminders left to be encountered for the first time, or the first few times. But, she said, they never stop entirely. No doubt you went through the same thing with the loss of your brother, and perhaps other losses I don't know about.
Today was the six month anniversary. It was a little bad in the morning, and may get a little bad later, but mostly it's been an otherwise unremarkable day.
You just keep on living with your loss. I don't have any clever advice.
This past weekend was Capricon 35, and Leah's name came up as I was talking to someone who'd attended a "history of Capricon" panel. Something she helped create is still going strong...
